Celebrating global heritage and culture: World Heritage Day 2026

At Emerald Cruises, we cherish the history, diversity and cultural heritage of every spectacular destination we visit. This World Heritage Day, we’re celebrating 10 unique UNESCO-recognised sites, handpicked by our journey planners to inspire your wanderlust.

The Wachau Valley

Austria

The Wachau Valley, a beautiful stretch of the Danube in Austria, offers a landscape shaped by nature and tradition. Vineyards climb the hillsides in neat terraces, designed to make the most of the sunlight and nurture the region’s well-known Riesling and Grüner Veltliner wines.

Along the river, you’ll discover villages and towns that feel quietly unchanged. In places like Dürnstein and Weissenkirchen, you can wander quiet streets where history feels close, and where life has evolved gently without losing its character.

Visit with us: Perched high above the Danube, magnificent Melk Abbey is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. Your included guided tour will take you through its ornate halls, grand library, and stunning frescoed ceilings, as you learn all about its history as a Benedictine monastery. Those looking for adventure can join a guided bike tour along the Danube, or a guided hike in Weissenkirchen.

Aldabra Atoll

Seychelles

Aldabra Atoll is one of the largest raised coral atolls in the world, located in the outer islands of Seychelles in the Indian Ocean. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its untouched ecosystems, giant tortoises, and rich marine biodiversity. The atoll consists of four main islands surrounding a shallow lagoon and is largely uninhabited. Its isolation has helped preserve rare species of birds, fish, and plants.

Not your typical tourist trap, strict conservation controls limit visitor numbers, offering something extremely rare in modern travel. Become part of a select few to experience near-pristine wilderness that is difficult to access by any other means – an absolute must-see for those looking to satisfy their wanderlust.

Explore with us: Arrive late in the morning at the most south-westerly part of the Seychelles, closer to the African coast than to Mahé. Enjoy its isolation and relish the opportunity to experience this incredible nature reserve.

This special itinerary features multiple World Heritage-listed sites in one journey. In UNESCO-recognised Stone Town, Zanzibar, you’ll find narrow streets, rich cultural diversity, carved doors, vibrant markets, and deep Swahili heritage. Continue to Kilwa Kisiwani, a historic island of medieval ruins that was once a powerful Swahili trading port and is now a World Heritage site. Finally, visit Praslin Island, a tropical paradise renowned for its white beaches, turquoise waters, and the Vallée de Mai forest, home to the rare coco de mer palms.
